How to read backlink numbers, and which tool each comes from

DA, DR, Trust Flow and referring domains are four measures from three companies. What each means and how to quote it.

Listings quote DA, DR, TF and "backlinks" as if they were one thing. They come from different companies with different data. Quote the tool next to the number, always.

Who measures what

NumberFromWhat it is
Domain Authority (DA)MozA 1 to 100 score predicting how likely a domain is to rank. Moz states it is not a Google ranking factor.
Domain Rating (DR)AhrefsThe strength of a site's backlink profile compared with others in Ahrefs' database, on a 100-point scale. Ahrefs says it is not a Google metric.
Trust Flow (TF)MajesticA 0 to 100 score. Majestic picked trusted seed sites by manual review; sites closer to them score higher.
Citation Flow (CF)MajesticA 0 to 100 score for the link equity a site carries, based on how many sites link to it.
Referring domainsAny link indexThe count of unique domains with at least one link to the target.

Why numbers differ between tools

Each company crawls its own slice of the web on its own schedule. Majestic keeps a Fresh Index of recently crawled data and a Historic Index going back to 2006; the two give different counts for the same site. A site can show DR 40 in one tool and DA 22 in another and neither is wrong.

How to use them

  • Use referring domains, not total backlinks. One site linking from every page can produce thousands of backlinks and one referring domain.
  • Compare like with like. Compare one tool's score across domains, never one tool's score against another's.
  • Look at the links. A score cannot tell you whether links are earned editorial links or paid, hacked or spam. Open the list and read thirty of them.
  • Check the date. Ask when the score was pulled. It moves.

How Market One prints them

A listing shows a link figure only when we have one, labelled with its source, and prints "None" otherwise. Our own article on buying an expired domain goes deeper, and this one lists free ways to see who links to you.
