Lesson 1 of 5 · 6 min

Decide what you want

Write one sentence before you browse: "I want X to do Y for Z." A name for a new brand, a site that earns ad income, a project to improve. Each points to different listings.

Pick a budget with room

Set a ceiling that includes the price, the first year's renewal, any hosting move and your time. Leave room for repairs; a purchased site usually needs work.

Know what you are buying

  • A domain is a name and its history.
  • A content site is a domain, pages, and possibly an audience.
  • A business adds customers, income and obligations.

The more a listing includes, the more you must check. Start with a domain if it is your first purchase.

Do this: write your sentence, your ceiling, and three must-haves.

See the numbers on real listings

Put the course to work: every listing names the source of each fact.
