Lesson 5 of 5 · 7 min

Take control after purchase

Buying ends when you control the domain, not when you pay.

  1. Start the transfer. Expect the registrar's steps: unlock, authorisation code, approval, then up to five calendar days under ICANN's policy.
  2. Turn on two-factor sign-in at your registrar the same day.
  3. Set the name servers and a renewal reminder.
  4. For a site, change every password, then add yourself as owner in Search Console.
  5. Set the domain to auto-renew, and note the expiry date.

After a transfer the registration gains a year, up to ten in total.

Do this: list the accounts you must own after purchase, and tick each off.
